Report Un-shoveled / Icy Sidewalks

Town ordinance 12.24.010 requires the owner or tenant of any property to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks, or make the ice even and cover it with sand, salt, ice melt, or such other product as to prevent slipping within six hours after it has stopped snowing, or, in the case of a storm that ends during the night-time hours, within six hours between sunrise and sunset. The width of the area to be cleared shall be at least 36 inches, and suitable for passage of a wheelchair, and any handicap access ramp(s) on the sidewalk abutting the property must also be cleared. No person in the act of removing snow from a sidewalk or property may place snow in the street or any other public way.

While the rule is six hours, we try to be reasonable for deciding when to start the clock, and try to take things such as the amount of snow, timing of the storm, or extreme cold into account. Our goal isn't to issue fines. We just want people - especially youth and seniors - to be able to get around safely.

If a property is in violation of these regulations, please assist us in directing our enforcement by letting us know using the form below. We will do our best to get the problem resolved during business hours, or issue fines if necessary. In the event of an emergency, please contact the appropriate department by phone, since reports via this form aren't checked when the office is closed. We ask that you give people at least 24 hours from the end of the storm to remove the snow and ice before notifying us of the issue.
