Shellfish Warden

Notice: Currently all shellfishing is closed in Winthrop.

Welcome to the Shellfish division of the Winthrop Harbormaster Department. Administratively, the Harbormaster is the Winthrop Shellfish Warden. The duties of the Shellfish Warden are discharged by the Deputy Shellfish Wardens who are certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as shellfish law enforcement officers.

The goal of the Shellfish Wardens is to set regulations, organize permitting, promote public education, protect our natural resources, and enforce laws pertaining to shellfishing. The Shellfish Wardens may be reached by calling the Harbormaster office at 617-207-9092 or by email.

Please note: Shellfishing is expected to return in Winthrop in the near future. Winthrop Deputy Shellfish Wardens continue to attend meetings, stay in contact with other related agencies, and monitor its progress.
