Winter Parking

Upon announcement by the National Weather Service or local news media outlets of expected or impending snowfall, motorists must remove parked vehicles from the streets. As a courtesy, the Town of Winthrop has strategically installed a system of blue lights throughout Winthrop that can be activated to alert residents of an impending storm. When lit, the lights indicate that a snow ban is in effect. Additionally, the town will inform residents via the official town website and social media accounts as well as WCAT. While the town will use these methods to notify motorists, please remember that persons responsible for parking automobiles must keep informed at all times of snowstorm forecasts in order that vehicles may be properly removed from town streets.

Parking Ban

All cars must be removed from Winthrop's Public Streets, except for:

  • Bowdoin Street - Odd Side from Buchanan St to Bates Avenue
  • Brookfield Road - Even Side
  • Morton Street - Marsh Side
  • River Road - Even Side
  • Seaview Avenue - Even Side
  • Siren Street - Odd Side from the Easterly property line of 19 Siren Street to Triton Avenue
  • Veterans Road Golf - Course Side
  • Waldemar Avenue - Odd Side from Wheelock St to Pleasant St
  • Walden Street Ingleside - Park Side
  • Winthrop Street - Odd Side from Magee's Corner to Banks St

See a map of these locations as well as municipal lots where parking is allowed during a snow event.

Vehicles must be removed from these excepted streets immediately upon cessation of snow during daylight hours or, in the case of storm events occurring during the nighttime hours, by 8 am in order to facilitate snow removal operations. Violators will be subject to ticketing or towing at the expense of the vehicle owner.

Blue Light Locations

  • Crest Avenue and Revere Street
  • Delby's Corner (Washington Avenue, Shirley Street, and Sturgis Street)
  • Magee's Corner (Main Street, Revere Street, and Winthrop Street)
  • Main Street and Hermon Street
  • Main Street and Pleasant Street
  • Pleasant Street and Pauline Pauline Street
  • Veterans Road and Shirley Street

When returning to the streets after a snowfall, please remember that vehicles cannot be parked more than 12 inches from the curb. While snow removal crews try to get as close to the curb as possible when plowing, motorists may need to clear out space for their car in order to meet this requirement. Additionally, town ordinance prohibits anyone from obstructing the public street or sidewalk without a permit from the Town Council. Therefore, any chairs, barrels, traffic cones or other objects placed in the public way to "reserve" parking spaces will be removed and disposed of immediately.
