• Asphalt Pavement, Brick, and Concrete: Asphalt pavement, brick, and concrete from the construction and demolition of buildings, roads, bridges, and similar sources
• Batteries: Lead-acid batteries used in motor vehicles or stationary applications.
• Cathode Ray Tubes: Any intact, broken, or processed glass tube used to provide the visual display in televisions, computer monitors, and certain scientific instruments such as oscilloscopes.
• Clean Gypsum Wallboard: A panel (known as drywall) with a gypsum core and faced with heavy paper or other material on both sides that is not contaminated with paint, wallpaper, joint compound, adhesives, or other substances after manufacture.
• Glass Containers: Glass bottles and jars (soda-lime glass). The ban does not apply to light bulbs, Pyrex cookware, plate glass, drinking glasses, windows, windshields, and ceramics.
• Leaves: Deciduous and coniferous leaf deposition.
• Mattresses: Resilient material or combination of materials that is enclosed by ticking, used alone or in combination with other products, that is intended for sleeping upon, except for mattresses that are contaminated with mold, bodily fluids, insects, oil, or hazardous substances. "Mattress" does not include any mattress pad, mattress topper, sleeping bag, pillow, car bed, carriage, basket, dressing table, stroller, playpen, infant carrier, lounge pad, crib bumper, liquid or gaseous-filled ticking, including any water bed and any air mattress that does not contain upholstery material between the ticking and the mattress core, and mattresses in futons and sofa beds. Mattresses include box springs. (Effective November 1, 2022.)
• Metal: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals from used appliances, building materials, industrial equipment, vehicles, and manufacturing processes.
• Metal Containers: Aluminum, steel, or bi-metal beverage and food containers.
• Recyclable Paper: All paper, cardboard, and paperboard products. The ban does not apply to tissue paper, toweling, paper plates and cups, wax-coated cardboard, and other low-grade paper products that cannot be used by paper mills as a result of normal intended use.
• Single Polymer Plastics: Plastic containers including bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs.
• Textiles: Clothing, footwear, bedding, towels, curtains, fabric, and similar products, except for textiles that are contaminated with mold, bodily fluids, insects, oil, or hazardous substances. (The town of Winthrop has Textile recovery bins located at the DPW, 100 Kennedy Drive, the Walden Street basketball courts, and the Public Landing on Shirley Street.)
• White Goods: Appliances employing electricity, oil, natural gas, or liquefied petroleum gas to preserve or cook food; wash or dry clothing, cooking or kitchen utensils, or related items. These typically include refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers, clothes dryers, gas or electric ovens and ranges, and hot water heaters. (These items can be collected every third Tuesday of the month with the advance purchase of a correct bulk sticker. You must contact the DPW if you miss the collection day to be added to the next month's list. These items are then taken to the appropriate recycling facilities.)
• Whole Tires: Motor vehicle tires of all types. Whole tires may be disposed of at combustion facilities. Shredded tires (a tire that has been cut, sliced, or ground into four or more pieces such that the circular form of the tire has been eliminated) are not prohibited.
• Wood: Treated and untreated wood, clean wood (trees, stumps, and brush, including but not limited to sawdust, chips, shavings, and bark). Wood may be disposed of at combustion facilities. **This includes C& D from households, doors, windows/frames, stairs, railings, etc.
• Yard Waste: Grass clippings, weeds, garden materials, shrub trimmings, and brush 1" or less in diameter (but not diseased plants).

A bulk item fee has been in effect since September 1, 2006.

Bulk Item - $10 for each item

Any item that is taller than 23 inches or wider than 36 inches is a bulk item. These items shall include but are not limited to;

• Orange - Love Seat or Couch or Sleep Sofa
• Orange - Sectional Couch. One sticker is needed per section
• Orange - Upholstered Side Chairs or Ottomans
• Orange - Coffee Tables or Side Tables
• Orange - Lamps (without light bulbs)
• Orange - Kitchen or Dining Table
• Orange - Non-upholstered Kitchen or Dining chair
• Orange - Upholstered Kitchen or Dining Chair
• Orange - China Cabinets or Hutch
• Orange - Upholstered Side Chair or Ottoman
• Orange - Armoire or Dresser or Desk
• Orange - Headboard or Footboard
• Orange - Shelving (broken down and secured together, no longer than 3-foot sections, and no more than 30 pounds)
• Orange - Rugs (must be cut into 3' wide sections, dry, rolled, taped, no larger than 8 by 10 accepted. Sticker needed per section)
• Orange - Mirrors (taped and wrapped)
• Orange - Plastic Outdoor Chair
• Orange - Metal Outdoor or Folding Chair
• Orange - Metal Bed Frame
• Orange- Vacuum 
• Orange- Bicycles
• Orange - Other (must specify the item for collection may not be used for mattresses or box springs)

Box springs and mattresses are available for pick-up from Capitol Waste Services. Please call them at 617-569-1718, to pay for and schedule a pick-up.

The following are not accepted as trash but can be picked up curbside, year-round, on the third Tuesday of every month only, with the purchase of a Bulk Item Sticker(s.)

If you have purchased a yellow, blue, or pink sticker and do not use it within the month of purchase, you must call 617-846-1341, ext. 2601 to get your name, address, and item on the schedule for the next month's collection.

Items containing Freon - $35 for each item.

These items shall include but are not limited to;

• Blue - Air Conditioner
• Blue - Refrigerator or Freezer (all doors must be removed before placing them outdoors)
• Blue - Water Coolers or Dispensers
• Blue - Ice Maker
• Blue - Countertop Wine Chiller
• Blue - Other (must specify the item for collection)

Appliances/White Goods - $25 for each item.

These items shall include but are not limited to;

• Yellow - Washing Machine
• Yellow - Dryer
• Yellow - Stove
• Yellow - Hot Water Tank (up to 55 gallons)
• Yellow - Push Lawn Mowers or Snowblowers (all oil, gas, and fluids must be removed)
• Yellow - Microwave
• Yellow - Trash Compactor
• Yellow - (De)Humidifier
• Yellow - Sewing Machine
• Yellow - Grills (with propane tank removed)
• Yellow - Exercise Bike, Home gym equipment
• Yellow - Treadmill/Workout Bench/Rowing machine
• Yellow - Other (must specify the item for collection)

E-Waste - $30 for each item.

These items shall include but are not limited to;

• Pink - TV
• Pink - Computer Monitor
• Pink - Printer
• Pink - Copier
• Pink - Scanner
• Pink - Laptop (Battery must be removed for Hazardous Waste Collection do not put it in the trash)
• Pink - Other (must specify item for collection)
